Appendix J Services by Graftel

PRIMARY CONTAINMENT TESTING PROGRAM EFFICIENCY REVIEW

Graftel is offering a service to review which components need to be tested, how they are tested and the acceptance criterion used to determine the acceptance criterion both on an As Left and on a performance basis.

Due to recent initiatives and changes in interpretations, most plants now perform more Appendix J tests than are required. In addition, acceptance criterions that are more stringent than needed are used. This review focuses on the elimination of unneeded Type B and C tests and the relaxation of the acceptance criterion when appropriate. Both outage time and dose may be reduced. This allows the site to focus critical resources on needed activities.

By reviewing your existing program, Graftel can provide a detailed technical and regulatory basis on a case by case basis for reducing unneeded testing. In most cases, these are not changes requiring relief from code or any exemption from federal regulations. A site safety review and procedure change is all that is needed to begin immediate implementation.

Appendix J Database
Option B of Appendix J is a performance-based rule. The testing requirements and frequencies of each component are dependant on the results of past and present component tests. The Graftel Appendix J database has the ability to contain component design data as well as the components As Found and As Left leakage history.

The database has the ability to maintain a running total of the Maximum Pathway leakage rates for comparison against the 0.6La limit. The code also has the capability of producing Monthly Leakage Reports and Total Leakage Reports. Software features include:

  • The acceptance criteria (AKA administrative limit) for each component.
  • The date of the last test on each component.
  •  The measured leakage rates from at least the last two tests on each component.
  • Component design information
  • Common failure mode information.
  • Graphical and printed reports
